Chapter 7: The Sabbath — The Meaning of Time "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy"—this is Commandment number four. I think it is essential that the biblical setting of these words be kept in mind.
The scene is still Sinai, and the Hebrew people are encamped at the foot of the mountain. It is the moment of Covenant. This is first in a series that we’re going to do concerning the Sabbath day versus Sunday. We’re going to make this very thorough, cover all the ground, cover all the scriptures.
We’re going to look at all of the arguments. We’re not going to leave any stone unturned to understand that God wants us to keep the Sabbath and His holy days. One critique I have is Edwards's uncritical use of the phrase 'Christian Sabbath.' While he makes brief mentions of 'Sunday' as pagan, and Sabbath as Jewish, by putting them together, the phrase at best looks like a convenient transfer of calling Sunday a modern Sabbath for Christians, at worse, an oxymoron/5(4).
The Sabbath is a weekly day of rest or time of worship given in the Bible as the seventh day. It is observed differently in Judaism and Christianity and informs a similar occasion in several other faiths.
Though many viewpoints and definitions have arisen over the millennia, most originate in the same textual tradition of "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy". Christian worship, O'Hare rightly observes (page ), "If Christ can raise up rocks to sing His praises (Matt ), why would it be so difficult for Him to raise up His beloved, who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, to worship at the appointed time (Ps)?" God didn’t make human beings slaves to the Sabbath to hurt or burden them; rather, He gave them one holy day in seven on which to rest and worship for their good.
Christ showed that the Sabbath continues into the New Testament: “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mk ), just as He is Lord of the church, Lord of the family.
