This measurement of time is clearly illustrated in the creation story in the book of Genesis. Chapter 7: The Sabbath — The Meaning of Time "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy"—this is Commandment number four. I think it is essential that the biblical setting of these words be kept in mind.

The scene is still Sinai, and the Hebrew people are encamped at the foot of the mountain. It is the moment of Covenant. This is first in a series that we’re going to do concerning the Sabbath day versus Sunday. We’re going to make this very thorough, cover all the ground, cover all the scriptures.

We’re going to look at all of the arguments. We’re not going to leave any stone unturned to understand that God wants us to keep the Sabbath and His holy days. One critique I have is Edwards's uncritical use of the phrase 'Christian Sabbath.' While he makes brief mentions of 'Sunday' as pagan, and Sabbath as Jewish, by putting them together, the phrase at best looks like a convenient transfer of calling Sunday a modern Sabbath for Christians, at worse, an oxymoron/5(4).

The Sabbath is a weekly day of rest or time of worship given in the Bible as the seventh day. It is observed differently in Judaism and Christianity and informs a similar occasion in several other faiths.

Though many viewpoints and definitions have arisen over the millennia, most originate in the same textual tradition of "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy". Christian worship, O'Hare rightly observes (page ), "If Christ can raise up rocks to sing His praises (Matt ), why would it be so difficult for Him to raise up His beloved, who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, to worship at the appointed time (Ps)?" Amen!5/5(1).

God didn’t make human beings slaves to the Sabbath to hurt or burden them; rather, He gave them one holy day in seven on which to rest and worship for their good.

Christ showed that the Sabbath continues into the New Testament: “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mk ), just as He is Lord of the church, Lord of the family. Once a Christian accepts that the seventh-day Sabbath is holy and a law of God, the question arises—how does a person keep the Sabbath holy.

The Bible doesn’t give a long list of dos and don’ts for how to keep the Sabbath, but it does provide us many solid principles to help us understand how to keep the Sabbath day holy. The ninth occurrence declares the Christian’s liberty from Sabbath law.

The New Testament nowhere commands believers to worship on the Sabbath. In fact, the New Testament seems to open any day as proper for worship (Romans ). Sabbath Worship Many verses in the book of Acts refer to the early Christian church meeting together on the Sabbath, which was Saturday, to pray and study the Scriptures.

Here are a few examples: On the Sabbath they [Paul and Barnabas] went to the synagogue for the services. The scriptures never imply that the Christian worship on Sunday is a Sabbath. We know, both from the clear testimony of early Christian history and from the New Testament passages that the early church worshipped on Sunday.

The worship day was known as the first day and sometimes as the eighth day or the Lord’s Day (Revelation ). Instead of the seventh day, and other festivals appointed by the old law, the church has prescribed the Sundays and holy days to be set apart for God’s worship; and these we are now obliged to keep in consequence of God’s commandment, instead of the ancient Sabbath.

—The Catholic Christian Instructed in the Sacraments, Sacrifices. All of us believe many things in regard to religion that we do not find in the Bible. For example, nowhere in the Bible do we find that Christ or the Apostles ordered that the Sabbath be changed from Saturday to Sunday.

We have the commandment of God given to Moses to keep holy the Sabbath day, that is the 7th day of the week, Saturday. Thus proper Sabbath observance in the home will have a lasting influence for time and eternity.

Sabbath Observance and Recreational activities Introduction. Sabbath observance includes both worship and fellowship. The invitation to enjoy both is open and generous.

Sabbath worship directed toward God usually takes place in a community of believers. The Book of Acts. There is some evidence for keeping the Sabbath in the book of Acts because most early Christians were Jews, which was their normal day of worship (Acts ; –44; ; ; ; ).

There is no command in Acts to worship on the Sabbath; it merely records that it was the habit of some to do it. Is the Sabbath Saturday, or is it the Holy Ghost baptism. Matthew But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. We must make sure that our doctrine of the Sabbath is correct.

The first possibility is that of most Christians who call Sunday the Sabbath or rest day. But there is a God, and He cares about His Sabbath. Proper Sabbath observance matters—for all eternity. But you need to deeply consider it because your eternal salvation is at stake. Sunday, the first day of the week, is purported to be the Christian day of worship.

It is commonly taught and believed that Jesus Christ and the 12 original apostles—and especially the apostle Paul—taught that Christians are no longer required to observe the Fourth Commandment, to keep the seventh-day Sabbath holy.
